About Us

Long Beach Steel Drum School is a non-profit organization catering to the youth in the greater Long Beach and surrounding cities in Los Angeles County.

George M. Xavier, Bishop and Founder of Long Beach Steel Drum School (LBSDS), is a native of the island of Trinidad and Tobago, home of the birth of the steel drum instrument.  After migration to the United States over 20 years ago, he recognized the opportunity to share this aspect of his culture, the art of playing music on steel drums. In the year 2000, Long Beach Steel Drum School had its humble beginnings in the garage of Bishop George Xavier with children from the neighborhood.
The desire to teach steel drum as an art form was enhanced by the knowledge that it is currently taught at the local University and some of the schools in the Long Beach Unified School District.  We aim to make the instrument available to youth, who may never be introduced or have the opportunity to learn to play music with it.  Its is our goal to provide an outlet to teach and learn the art of steel drum music.

Currently the school affairs is managed by Ms. Jillian Xavier who can be reached at lbsteeldrumschool@gmail.com
